JEFFREY M. KANE, PARTNER
Background: Principal and founding attorney Jeff Kane holds a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from Brown University, a Master's Degree in civil and environmental engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Oregon. Jeff brings a unique technical and practical perspective to the practice of law. Before obtaining his J.D., Jeff worked as a consultant and civil engineer on hazardous waste, water quality, air quality, aquatic ecosystems, wilderness and public lands issues.
Jeff is admitted to practice in all Colorado courts, the U.S. District Court of Colorado, and the Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He is a member of the Colorado Bar Association and its Southwestern Colorado, Water Law, Real Estate Law, and Environmental Law sections. He has been a featured presenter at Colorado Water Congress and Colorado Special District Association conferences on topics ranging from regulation nutrients and other complex pollutants to managing water projects to balance the needs of humans and wildlife within the strictures of the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act. He serves clients in Durango, Bayfield, Pagosa Springs, Mancos, Cortez, Dolores, Silverton, Ouray, Ridgway, and Telluride.
Prior to founding Southwest Water and Property Law LLC, Jeff worked at two premier private law firms in Durango, Colorado. Jeff represents a range of public and private clients and has experience in regulatory compliance, real estate, water, wildlife, utility, governance, construction, lending, business transactions, litigation, civil disputes and mediation. Jeff views each matter as an opportunity to get to know his clients in order to better assist them with understanding and managing risk. Jeff prides himself on providing great value to all clients, regardless of the scope of the matter.

Interests: When Jeff is not in the office, you can find him mountain biking, rafting, trail running, skiing, playing softball, grooving on his upright bass, or otherwise exploring southwest Colorado with his wife and two boys. Jeff volunteers his time coaching baseball, as a mediator in local courts, and providing pro bono advice and representation, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the Colorado Lawyer Trust Account Foundation.
